Absolutely. For a first Japan trip, I’d keep it to the Golden Route: Tokyo → Mt. Fuji → Kyoto → Nara → Osaka. It gives you modern Japan, temples, food, shopping and nature without wasting the 10 days on too many hotel changes. I’m assuming departure from Mumbai, Indian passport, 10 days/9 nights, and a comfortable mid-range budget. Once you give me your exact dates and number of travellers, I can turn this into an exact flight + Airbnb + booking plan. Your 10-day itinerary Day Sleep Plan 1 – Arrive Tokyo Tokyo Airport → Airbnb → Asakusa → Senso-ji → Nakamise → Tokyo Skytree area. Keep this day light because of the flight. 2 – Modern Tokyo Tokyo Meiji Shrine → Harajuku → Omotesando → Shibuya Crossing → Hachiko → Shibuya Sky around sunset → Shibuya nightlife. 3 – Tokyo highlights Tokyo Tsukiji Outer Market → teamLab Planets → Ginza → Akihabara in evening. 4 – Mt. Fuji Tokyo Early trip to Kawaguchiko → Lake Kawaguchi → Chureito Pagoda/Fuji viewpoints → return Tokyo evening. 5 – Tokyo → Kyoto Kyoto Morning Shinkansen → check in → Nishiki Market → Pontocho → Gion → Yasaka Shrine evening walk. 6 – Traditional Kyoto Kyoto Fushimi Inari around 7 AM → Kiyomizu-dera → Sannenzaka/Ninenzaka → Yasaka Pagoda → Gion. 7 – Western Kyoto Kyoto Early Arashiyama Bamboo Grove → Tenryu-ji → Togetsukyo Bridge → Kinkaku-ji. 8 – Nara → Osaka Osaka Check out → Nara Park → Todai-ji → continue to Osaka → check in at Namba → Dotonbori at night. 9 – Osaka Osaka Osaka Castle → Kuromon Market → Shinsekai → Umeda/Shinsaibashi → final evening Dotonbori. 10 – Departure — Easy breakfast/shopping around Namba → Nankai train to Kansai Airport → fly home. This gives you 4 nights Tokyo + 3 nights Kyoto + 2 nights Osaka. 1. Flights from Mumbai The best ticket structure is: Mumbai (BOM) → Tokyo (HND/NRT) Osaka (KIX) → Mumbai (BOM) That is called an open-jaw / multi-city ticket. It avoids spending your last day taking the Shinkansen all the way back to Tokyo. Current airline searches show ANA fares from Mumbai to Tokyo around ₹64,500+ return on selected dates, with Mumbai–Osaka pricing also appearing around the ₹65,000 level on certain dates. Air India currently lists nonstop Mumbai–Tokyo services, while ANA operates the Mumbai–Narita route. Prices vary considerably by actual dates. For planning, I would budget: Flight level Budget/person Very good fare ₹60,000–₹70,000 Normal fare ₹70,000–₹85,000 Peak season ₹90,000+ For Tokyo, Haneda is more convenient than Narita, so if HND is only a little more expensive, choose Haneda. My booking rule would be: if BOM → Tokyo / Osaka → BOM costs less than roughly ₹10,000–₹15,000 extra versus a Tokyo return ticket, take the open-jaw itinerary. 2. Japan tourist visa from India For an Indian passport holder, Japan requires a visa. For tourism, India participates in Japan's eVISA arrangement, but applications are still facilitated through VFS in India; successful applicants receive an electronic visa rather than a passport sticker. The tourism visa can cover stays of up to 90 days. For applications made from 1 July 2026 through 31 March 2027, the Japanese visa fee for Indian nationals is ₹500 for either single or multiple entry, plus VFS charges. If you apply in Mumbai, the current VFS guidance allows walk-in submission; VFS lists Mumbai hours as Monday–Friday and currently says appointments are required only at specified other centres. Prepare this visa file You should prepare one clean folder containing: Passport valid for at least 6 months from entry, plus passport bio-page copies. Completed Japan visa application. Recent 2 × 2 inch photograph, white background. Flight reservation showing arrival/departure. Airbnb/hotel reservations for all 9 nights. Detailed 10-day itinerary with accommodation/contact details. Personal bank statements for the last 3 months. Personal Income Tax Returns; Mumbai VFS states bank statements and ITR are mandatory. If employed: employment certificate/NOC, salary slips and leave approval are useful supporting documents. If self-employed: company/registration and financial documents. Covering letter explaining purpose and who is paying for the trip. There is no official fixed bank-balance threshold stated on the official pages I checked. Your financial documents should simply demonstrate that your income/savings reasonably cover the proposed airfare, accommodation and travel expenses. Avoid relying on internet claims such as “₹2 lakh mandatory.” Mumbai VFS currently quotes an indicative processing period of around 10 working days, though actual processing can vary. Japan's embassy also notes that applications can generally be lodged up to three months before travel. I would apply 4–6 weeks before departure, not at the last minute. One important eVISA detail: at the airport, you must display the visa issuance notice electronically on your phone; VFS says a screenshot, PDF or printed version is not accepted for this purpose. 3. Where I would book your Airbnbs Tokyo – 4 nights My choice: Asakusa/Ueno. Look within around a 5–8 minute walk of Asakusa, Ueno, Tawaramachi or Kuramae station. Why: good food, relatively relaxed at night, easy airport connectivity and much better value than staying directly around Shibuya. Airbnb's current published averages show Asakusa at roughly ₹10,000–₹11,500/night around September–November, while Shinjuku averages roughly ₹10,800–₹12,600/night during the same period. Target: ₹9,000–₹12,000/night Kyoto – 3 nights My choice: Kyoto Station / Gojo area. Gion looks better in photographs, but Kyoto Station is much easier for the Shinkansen, Nara, buses and moving luggage. Airbnb currently shows Kyoto averages around ₹11,000 in September and roughly ₹15,000–₹16,000 during October/November, so autumn dates can be noticeably more expensive. Target: ₹10,000–₹15,000/night Osaka – 2 nights My choice: Namba / Shinsaibashi. Try to stay within walking distance of: Namba Station → Shinsaibashi → Dotonbori That means you can walk back after dinner/nightlife and also have excellent Kansai Airport connectivity. Target: ₹8,000–₹12,000/night For every Airbnb, I would use filters for 4.7+ rating, strong recent reviews, private bathroom, entire unit, air-conditioning, washing machine, luggage-friendly access/elevator and ≤10-minute walk to a station. Japan regulates private lodging/minpaku operations, so use legitimate registered/licensed accommodation and do not move a reservation or payment off-platform. For the visa stage, favour free-cancellation/refundable accommodation rather than locking ₹1 lakh into non-refundable stays before the visa decision. 4. Transport inside Japan Do not buy a nationwide JR Pass for this itinerary. A 7-day nationwide JR Pass is around ¥50,000 online, with agency pricing rising to ¥53,000 from October 2026, whereas your main expensive rail journey is basically Tokyo → Kyoto plus relatively inexpensive Kansai travel. Instead: Journey What to use Tokyo airport → city Haneda: Keikyu/Monorail. Narita: Skyliner or Narita Express Tokyo local travel Suica/PASMO/ICOCA-compatible IC card Tokyo → Kyoto Nozomi Shinkansen Kyoto local IC card + occasional bus/subway pass Kyoto → Nara JR or Kintetsu Nara → Osaka Kintetsu/JR Osaka local ICOCA/IC card Namba → KIX Nankai Rapi:t or Airport Express A Tokyo→Kyoto Nozomi takes about 2¼ hours and currently costs roughly ¥14,000 one way depending on ticket type/season. SmartEX is the official reservation service for the Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka Shinkansen corridor. A useful small trick: travelling Tokyo → Kyoto, try for Seat E in an ordinary car for the Mt. Fuji side when visibility cooperates. For local transport, simply load an IC card and tap in/out. You don't need to buy a pass every day. Tokyo's tourist subway tickets currently cost ¥1,000 / ¥1,500 / ¥2,000 for 24/48/72 hours, covering Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway. They make sense when you plan many subway journeys. Kyoto's Subway & Bus 1-Day Pass is currently ¥1,100. Osaka Metro's one-day ticket currently costs ¥820 weekdays or ¥620 on weekends/holidays. From Osaka Namba to Kansai Airport, the Nankai Rapi:t takes as little as 34 minutes; a current digital-ticket offer is around ¥1,300. 5. Approximate trip budget Today's exchange rate is approximately this: For planning I would use roughly ¥1,000 ≈ ₹616 and leave some buffer for currency movement. Per person if 2 people share the Airbnbs Expense Approx. International flights ₹65,000–₹90,000 Airbnb share – 9 nights ₹45,000–₹60,000 Shinkansen + airports + local transport + Fuji ₹20,000–₹25,000 Food ₹25,000–₹35,000 Attractions ₹8,000–₹15,000 Visa/VFS/eSIM/insurance ₹4,000–₹7,000 Expected total ₹1.7–₹2.3 lakh/person For a solo traveller, accommodation pushes the total closer to roughly ₹2.2–₹2.8 lakh. That excludes major shopping, Disney/Universal Studios and luxury dining. 6. Food budget Japan does not need to be extremely expensive for food. A practical daily pattern would be: Breakfast: convenience store/bakery ¥500–800 Lunch: ramen/curry/donburi ¥900–1,500 Dinner: ¥1,500–3,000 Coffee/snacks: ¥500–1,000 So around ¥4,000–¥6,000/day/person gives you a comfortable food budget. Make sure you try Tokyo sushi/ramen, Kyoto soba/tofu/matcha, Nara mochi and Osaka takoyaki, okonomiyaki and kushikatsu. 7. Internet, cards and cash Get a 10–20 GB Japan eSIM before departure. Google Maps is extremely useful for Japanese public transport because it identifies the train line, platform and exit. Take at least two international cards from different banks. Keep around ¥20,000–¥30,000 cash initially for smaller restaurants, temples, ticket machines and places where cards may not be convenient. Don't exchange your entire spending budget into cash in India. 8. Luggage For 10 days, I would travel with: 1 medium checked suitcase + 1 backpack/person. Avoid huge luggage. Japanese stations are easy until you're changing trains with a 25–30 kg suitcase. For your Day 8 Kyoto → Nara → Osaka journey, either send your large suitcase from Kyoto to the Osaka accommodation using Japan's luggage-forwarding service, or leave it in a station locker and collect it after Nara. That makes Nara far more enjoyable. 9. Travel insurance Buy travel insurance covering: medical treatment, emergency hospitalization, baggage loss/delay, passport loss, flight cancellation/interruption and personal liability. Japan's consular information specifically recommends overseas travel insurance because medical treatment can be expensive. 10. Before entering Japan After the visa is approved, create your account on Visit Japan Web and register your passport, flight, immigration and customs information. It produces the code used for streamlined arrival formalities. The service is officially operated by Japan's Digital Agency and is free. Complete it a few days before departure rather than standing at Mumbai airport trying to fill it out. Your booking sequence The safest order is: Choose dates → check passport → reserve refundable flight/Airbnb → prepare visa itinerary → submit Japan visa → wait for approval → confirm flights/stays → book Shinkansen → book Fuji transport → book teamLab/Shibuya Sky and other timed attractions → buy insurance/eSIM → complete Visit Japan Web → travel. I would not prepay lots of expensive non-refundable attractions before the visa comes through. And since you have the Google Calendar option available, once we settle the dates I can structure each Japan day with the morning/afternoon/evening plan and transport timing so it can be added directly to your calendar. Send me just (1) preferred travel month/dates, (2) number of adults/children, and (3) your total budget, and I can make the next version with actual Mumbai flight options, exact Airbnb neighbourhood searches, exact train timings and a day-by-day cost sheet.
